Visualizing Drumming

Designer • 2015 • 2 min

Created as part of a university assignment, this is a 6-part illustration series that captures my emotions while playing the drums.

The Design Brief

Research and conduct a study of an object that has meaning to you. Facilitate a deeper understanding through design research and visually represent its evocative qualities.

What drums mean to me

At the beginning of my second year at university, I received this brief as a design project. It totally threw me out of my comfort zone, which I often enjoy.

I had so much to say about drumming. This was the first time I had ever mapped a string of heartfelt memories on paper. Deep introspection in the design phase was a powerful tool.

2D Explorations

Sketching out memories, thoughts and impressions from my brain onto the paper.

Material Explorations

“…the constant adjustment of pressure, speed, and angle depending on thickness of string and section of bow; the sweet spot of resonance when the instrument is allowed to vibrate freely; the great beauty that can be found in simple, constant sound played fully, evenly, purely.” (From an essay titled "The Cello", Evocative Objects, Sherry Turkle)

Outcome

And this, is what I feel, see, and think during the practice of drumming.
