Visualizing Drumming

A 6-part series of illustrations to visualize my emotions while drumming.

Design Brief

Research and conduct a study of an object that has meaning to you. Facilitate a deeper understanding through design research and visually represent its evocative qualities.

What drums mean to me

In the beginning of my second year at university, I received this brief as a design project and it totally threw me out of my comfort zone. And I enjoyed that.

I had so much to say about drumming. This was the first time I had ever mapped a string of heartfelt memories on paper. Deep introspection in the design phase was a powerful tool.

“…the constant adjustment of pressure, speed, and angle depending on thickness of string and section of bow; the sweet spot of resonance when the instrument is allowed to vibrate freely; the great beauty that can be found in simple, constant sound played fully, evenly, purely.” (From an essay titled "The Cello", Evocative Objects, Sherry Turkle)

Outcome

And this, is what I feel, see, and think during the practice of drumming.
